In my previous blog on Seeking a Mentor, I discussed the importance of finding a mentor and building a relationship that can positively impact your personal and professional growth. In this blog, we will delve deeper into the various aspects of mentorship and what you can expect from such a relationship. Let's jump right into it!

Types of Mentorship

Advice

One of the primary roles of a mentor is to provide valuable advice to guide your career or personal development decisions. They will be able to advice you on how to tackle a difficult situation and make the most of them. It's important to note that most mentors offer advice as needed and might not be heavily involved in your goals. As a mentee, make the most of this relationship by taking notes during your conversations and reviewing them to you apply the guidance effectively. Remember, don't let the advice go to waste.

Training

If your mentor shares the same career path as you, they can offer valuable training and insights. I have trained mentees in my previous organization. As the role was technical in nature, I was training them on how to learn the finer nuances, what kind of information they can access to ace the task at hand, or even how to work smart. I assigned tasks to make sure they were using their knowledge and it had a tangible outcome. As a mentee, embrace such an opportunity as you will be endowed with knowledge that will only be attained with years of experience.

Anchor

When your mentor holds a senior or managerial position in your organization, they can act as your anchor. They can guide you to succeed within the organization and vouch for you at the time of appraisals. An anchor will of course groom you for success but at the same time you have the responsibility to show up for yourself and prove your worth. Do not expect your mentor to be your anchor without putting in the required amount of effort and showing initiative in the work that your do. The ownership of your success still falls on you under the guidance of your mentor.

In my previous organization, my managers without me asking for it became my anchors in the organization. They suggested my name for rewards and recognitions. They made sure I was promoted and received appraisals that were as per the effort I had shown at work. Sometime your work will speak more volumes. So take initiative and do not worry about formally identifying anchors within the organization. You will find out who your anchors.

Support

Goal setting form a vital part of this mentorship technique. A mentor who wants you to take charge of your life will encourage you to set goals. They will check in at regular intervals to make sure you are meeting your goals. They will encourage you to incorporate daily habits that will help you achieve your short term or long term goals. This kind of support from a mentor is hands-on and will encourage you to get into new habits that set you up for success and growth through out your life.

Coaching

Coaching is a relatively new form of mentorship that focuses on increasing your self-awareness. This includes identifying your attitude, behavior and habits that might be hindering your success. Coaching is designed to encourage self development. Coaching might be coupled with any of the above mentioned mentorship techniques. Some professionals often offer coaching to help CEOs, managers or entrepreneurs for a fee for their specialization in the field.

In conclusion, mentorship is a valuable opportunity to shape your career and personal growth, leaving a positive impact on both the mentee and the mentor. As a mentee, respect your mentor's time, build a strong relationship, and take initiative in following and applying the guidance you receive. Show your gratitude for their efforts by demonstrating the benefits you've gained from their mentorship. Remember, some mentorship relationships evolve over time, so stay open to growth and learning throughout the journey.
