Phones are a well known source of distraction. However, mobile/tablet games take the distraction to another level. The companies developing these games know how to keep us hooked. Games have been my preferred way to release stress. This goes back to the time when SUDOKU puzzles were published in the newspapers - long before the era of mobile apps. During my exams, I would resort to solving sudoku puzzles. The sense of accomplishment would set a positive tone for the rest of the day.
However, it isn’t one puzzle a day anymore. On the mobile app, I get stuck in the relentless cycle of solving one puzzle after another. The instantaneous gratification is hard to resist. I started to notice myself playing these games mindlessly while watching a movie/show or even spending time with loved ones, which is clearly disrespectful. It dawned on me that I was unable to enjoy the small moments and decided to uninstall all games from my phone.
The outcome of this drastic decision has been nothing short of remarkable:
Reclaiming Entertainment: Watching movies or shows has become a whole new experience. Now, I can truly enjoy every detail – the direction, the acting, and the story. I am rediscovering the joy of pure entertainment.
Heightened Presence: Spending time with family and friends is different now. I am able to provide them my undivided attention. The time I spend with my loved ones are more meaningful and intentional.
Unleashed Creativity: Without games, I have tapped into my creative side. I write more often and am overflowing with ideas. It's amazing how much I can create when I'm not glued to a screen.
Eliminating Mental Clutter: Remember that constant urge to beat the next level? It's gone. My mind is clear of all that noise. I've got more mental space for things that really matter.
Embracing Connection: When I'm anxious, I turn to friends and family instead of games. Talking to them distracts me in the best way possible. It's a better escape which is helping me embrace my connections.
Discovering Happiness: The best part? I'm happier. It's the most unexpected outcome. Letting go of games has brought more peace and calm into my life.
Acknowledging my previous gaming addiction, I've swapped out those gaming sessions for something better. Activities like exercise, swimming, meditation, and reading have become my new companions in times of anxiety.
And guess what's next? Social media, that's what! I've taken the initiative to set a timer for my social media usage. Curbing its influence is the next challenge. Let's see how this experiment pans out 🤞
In the grand scheme of things, letting go of those gaming apps has turned out to be a game-changer. It's like trading in mindless distractions for the real deal – genuine experiences that life has to offer. This journey is still unfolding, with plenty of room for growth. As I move forward, one thing's for sure: I'm committed to making purposeful choices that add richness to my life.
