Setting goals is an essential part of achieving success and happiness in our lives. But sometimes, it can be challenging to know how to set effective goals. In this post, we'll explore the key steps to setting goals that will lead to success and happiness.

1. Specific
One of the most important things when setting goals is to be specific. Vague goals like "get fit" are difficult to achieve because they lack specificity. Instead, try setting a specific goal like "lose 10 kgs in 1 year". Being specific about what you want to achieve which will help you stay focused and accountable to your goals.
2. Measurable
Another critical aspect of setting goals is making them measurable. When you can measure your progress, you can track your progress and know when you've achieved your goal. For example, "workout four times a week" or “limit eating outside food to two meals a week” are measurable goals because you have a clear target to aim for.
3. Achievable
It's important to set goals that are both challenging and realistic. If your goal is too difficult or unrealistic, you may become discouraged and give up. On the other hand, if your goal is too easy, you may not feel motivated to work towards it. Strive for a goal that is both challenging and attainable.
Taking the same get fit example forward, an achievable goal would be to start with a 10 mins stretching followed by exercises and increasing the time by 3 to 5 mins each week. This would be realistic and achievable if you aren’t in the habit of exercising. Yet it is challenging enough to make you feel like you are working towards your goal.
4. Relevant
This is an important step, identify the WHY behind your goal. For example, if you want to lose weight for the wedding then you have to invest more time to lose weight. However, if your intention is to lose weight for better mental and physical well-being then your fitness regime must accommodate your lifestyle so that you do not fall off the wagon.
5. Time-bound
Goals without deadlines can easily fall by the wayside. Setting a timeline helps keep you on track and provides a sense of urgency. Decide when you want to achieve your goal and work backward to create a timeline that includes specific milestones and deadlines.
SMART goals are a great way to achieve your goals, however, if you follow the additional steps you can go the extra mile to trick your brain into falling in line.
6. Write It Down
Writing your goals down makes them more tangible and helps you stay accountable. You can write them in a journal, on a sticky note, or in a planner. Place your written goals somewhere visible to remind you of what you're working towards.
You can additionally block time in your calendar to make time for your goals.
7. Track your Progress
Create a habit tracker. You can check off the task for the day once you complete it. This will increase your confidence and keep you motivated to add more check off more tasks daily.
You can take pictures and record your journey, or you can add it to a spreadsheet or notes app. You can even share it on social media if that gives you the push and confidence. Find what encourages you the most and do it.
8. Consider Potential Obstacles
Think about any obstacles that might get in the way of achieving your goal. This will help you prepare for potential challenges and come up with strategies to overcome them. In the case of our fitness example, you can account for festivals or gatherings that you have planned which might throw you off your progress.
9. Celebrate Your Progress
Celebrating small wins along the way can help you stay motivated and feel a sense of accomplishment. Recognize the progress you've made towards your goal and celebrate it, even if you're not yet where you want to be.
